Should you run into problems, we provide information on how to check your configuration in Mac OS 9 and OS X in our self-help guide. Also, most modern Linux distributions should work without any problems with the majority of Ethernet adapters, without the need for any manual configuration. You will need to ensure that the operating system is set to obtain an IP address automatically via DHCP.
No. Not to the wired port. To connect more than one machine at once to the network in your room would require you to extend the network using a hub, switch or wireless access point. Extending the network in this way is not permitted; the ResNet has been designed to allow you to connect a single machine at a time to the port in your bedroom. You can change the connected machine as often as you like. There is no restriction on the number of wireless connections you can make simultaneously.
No. Only IP addresses allocated via DHCP (server assigned) can be used. If you attempt to set a fixed IP address yourself then you may cause an IP address conflict with another system on the network if the DHCP server attempts to allocate that address. If you choose the wrong address, you could deny access to the network for several hundred other people. You must ensure your computer is configured to automatically configure its IP address via DHCP. The IP address you are allocated will be a "private" IP which is translated to allow you to access the Internet.
Why do I get an "This distribution list has reached the maximum size for your network e-mail server" error message when you try to add another contact to a Contact Group/Distribution List? Whilst it is possible to add 500 individual contacts to an email in the to: cc: or bcc: field, Contact Groups work slightly differently. The size of a Contact Group is limited not by number of items but by the file size of the group itself. This essentially means that they are limited to an undefined but finite length of up to 120 to 130 contacts. Microsoft recommends that Contact Groups are no more than 50 to 70 contacts in length.

Microsoft Office documents can be converted to web pages using SiteBuilder. This can be very useful if you already have a document such as a Word document and you want to put it online as a web page rather than leaving it as a Word file. Turning the document into a web page is usually more efficient web practice. It is quicker for the user as they do not have to stop their flow to open another program to deal with the document (assuming that they have the necessary program installed of course). It is also quicker for the editor of the page as they only have to edit the one web page, rather than updating the appropriate Office document, uploading the latest version and ensuring the link points to the right file each time they make a change.
Previously we had a separate archive system and old mail was automatically moved into this and made available to you from a search facility within your email mailbox. As part of the migration of email accounts in 2011/12, all data in the archive system was un-archived back to the email mailboxes before your account was migrated. All messages from the archive system have been restored to the folders in which they were originally filed (Inbox; Sent Items, or a personal folder you created). Therefore you do not need to retrieve any previously archived emails; they are directly available from your current email folders. Each mailbox underwent several passes through the un-archiving process to ensure completeness. However if in the unlikely event you still have an email which is truncated and ends with “This is a message that has been archived, click the following link to retrieve it” unfortunately this means there was some issue with the email and it could not be un-archived. The contents of this email are unrecoverable as the central archive and retrieval system is no longer in service.
You should ensure your machine has anti-virus software installed. ITS managed machines should have Kaspersky Anti-Virus installed. This is indicated by the presence of a black and red "K" icon in the task-bar (lower right of the screen). If for any reason this is not present you should contact the Help Desk.
